Christmas Cheer

December 19, 2017

December 2017

To All Our Special Guests

We are fast approaching Christmas!  The tree is up, the decorations are out and my kitchen is alive with the sounds and sweet smells of swirled Christmas cake mixture and mince pies already in the oven.

I wanted to write and wish you all a very merry Christmas from a very beautiful, lush and green Mana Pools.  The early rains meant literally an overnight transition from a hot, dry and dusty October bush to a beautiful, fresh and green landscape filled with hungry and happy wildlife.  The bush is alive with the babies of Mana.  Dancing little impala everywhere and sightings of the suckling lion cubs happen almost daily.  The mini warthogs can be spotted dashing across the fields, chasing each other in delight!  It really is quite spectacular to witness the magic of Mana right now.

We have had a wonderful season this year, made extra special by the faces we got to welcome into Camp and the people we spent time with.  It has been our busiest season yet, which, given the turbulent current economic and political climate, is no mean feat!  We were very happy with the recent Government changes and are feeling positive as we head towards a brighter future, not just for Mwinilunga but for Zimbabwe and the Tourism Industry in general.

In August we hosted our biggest group ever, a post wedding gathering, of 30 people which was a first for us.  My little camp kitchen churned out more dishes than it has ever done, but Mana didn’t disappoint and everyone had a great time.  We survived the late October flash floods with smiles still on our faces!  Six hours of solid rainfall and a recording of 167ml was not expected at that time of year! We have never had to transfer our guests to the airstrip by a mixed means of foot, canoe and vehicle before but again, an entirely new experience for our guests in camp at the time and one that won’t be forgotten!

Our two special guests who fly every year from overseas to stay in Camp with us in November got to witness our first mini hurricane!  Again, another unexpected situation that came to life as we sat around the dinner table!  A massive storm hit with howling winds hurtling down the river, lifting all sorts of everything off the ground and actually tearing a couple of our tents.  Clean up the next day was interesting to say the least, but its messages like these that make what we do so special.

“If I had to be in a hurricane in the bush, I’m so glad it was with you and your awesome team.  I was never afraid!’’

We were so saddened to hear news of the passing of Craig Coid. He was a wonderful friend, a fantastic Professional Guide and we will miss him a lot.  Our condolences go out to all his family and friends at this sad time.

Dave and I love our life in the bush, and a big part of that is because of the amazing guests we meet and get to interact with throughout the seasons.   So to you all, a very big thank you for your support and friendship and we look forward to welcoming you back to Mwinilunga soon.  To those of you who haven’t made it into camp yet, we look forward to meeting you and showing you the magic of Mana!!

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year,

With Love

Dave, Tess, Andrew and all the Mwinilunga Team
